What is Self-Exclusion?

Self-Exclusion is tool for people who have decided they wish to stop gambling for a period of at least 6 months and wish to be supported in their decision to stop by self-excluding via an official scheme.

If you think you are spending too much time or money gambling, in an Adult Gaming Centre (AGC), Bingo Hall, Casino, Betting Shop or Online, then you can ask to be self-excluded.

Self-Exclusion is a customer tool and its up to you to adhere to your decision to abstain from gambling. Once your exclusion has been registered it cannot be reversed.

The gambling businesses you have excluded from should take all reasonable steps to prevent you from breaching your self-exclusion, but ultimately the responsibility lies with you not to break the terms of your exclusion.

Once you have registered for self-exclusion, the businesses you have excluded from must close any gambling accounts you have, remove your name and details from any marketing lists and return any money in your account to you. This should be done by all operators your exclusion applies too.

Offline Self-Exclusion

All operators that offer gambling in a licensed premise (AGCs, Bingo, Casino, and betting shops) must offer Self-Exclusion and must be part of a multi-operator self-exclusion scheme.

The multi-operator schemes allow a person to exclude from more than one premises, offering the same time off from gambling e.g. a person can exclude from betting shops in a geographical area or radius, rather than needing to exclude multiple times in multiple shops.

A person can also exclude from a single venue.

Self-exclusion is quite simple. The excluder is responsible for not attempting to gamble in any premises or online that they have selected for their exclusion. It is possible that an excluder might be able to gamble in a licenced venue without being identified or detected. It is the role of the operators to ensure that these opportunities are minimised, they therefore have to take reasonable precautions to prevent this from happening.

Online Self-Exclusion

From the 31st of March 2020 all licensed online operators in Britain are required to participate in GAMSTOP, a multi-operator self-exclusion scheme for the online sector. GAMSTOP allows a person to self-exclude from all online operators with a single request.

More information can be found at www.gamstop.co.uk

A person can also exclude from a single online operator; more information is available by searching for self-exclusion on a gambling website or by looking in their gambling help tools.
